Most security cameras are excellent at one thing: recording what already happened. You find out about the break-in the next morning, rewind the footage, and watch it play out — hours too late to do anything about it. The cameras did their job. They just never told anyone in time.

That was the situation for a client running a commercial premises in Cape Town. They had a solid set of cameras covering the yard, entrances and perimeter, all feeding a recorder in a back office. Good coverage. Good image quality. Zero ability to raise the alarm while an incident was in progress. The only "alerting" they had was the recorder's built-in motion detection — which fired on wind, rain, moving shadows, cats and headlights so often that everyone had long since switched the notifications off.

So the brief was deliberately narrow: keep every existing camera exactly where it is, and add a layer on top that watches the live feeds and understands what it is looking at. No rip-and-replace. No per-camera subscription. No sending a business's private security footage off to somebody else's servers.


Knowing What Actually Matters

The reason old-style motion alerts are useless is that they react to pixels changing, not to events happening. A branch moving in the wind changes pixels. So does a person climbing a fence. To the recorder, those look identical — so it either cries wolf constantly or gets muted.

The layer we added watches each feed and identifies what is in frame — a person, a vehicle — and ignores the rest. That single distinction removes the overwhelming majority of false alarms. On top of that, we work with the client to draw the areas that matter on each camera view:

The Alert That Actually Reaches You

An alert is only useful if it lands somewhere a person will see it, immediately, wherever they are. In South Africa, that place is WhatsApp.

When the system sees a person where a person should not be, it sends a WhatsApp message — with a snapshot of exactly what triggered it — to whoever needs to know. Not a link to log in somewhere. Not an email that gets read tomorrow. A picture on your phone, in seconds, that lets you decide in one glance whether you are looking at a staff member who came back for their keys or a genuine problem.

Escalation When No One Responds

A message is easy to miss at two in the morning. So for the situations that warrant it, the system escalates. If the first alert goes unacknowledged within a set time, it places an automated phone call. If that is not answered, it moves to the next person on the list. The point is simple: a real event should not depend on one person happening to glance at their phone.


Footage Stays Where It Belongs

This mattered to the client and it matters to us. A business's security footage is sensitive. The intelligence layer runs on equipment on the client's own site, watching the cameras over their own network. The video is not streamed to a third-party cloud, and there is no per-camera monthly fee that grows every time they add a camera. What leaves the premises is a single alert and a single snapshot, sent only to the people the client nominates.
